    Works Perfectly

I bought this to replace a Westinghouse dual fuel which never worked after the initial break-in. This one started up after 2 pulls and has performed flawlessly for 3 different days of SCE shutting off power for high winds (after they spent the last 3 years replacing all the lines in our mountains - another story). We'll see how it performs after steady use, but so far very encouraging.

    Has served me very well

Purchased from HD the winter of 2023/24 as Pineapple Express blew over trees all over Monterey Peninsula. Had house main panel wired to connect to generator and it powers the entire house (I flip all 50A+ breakers). I attend to recommended maintenance using Generac's maintenance pack and have since run ~40 hours without any trouble for 3 12+ hour outage events.

    Failed miserably

I bought this generator along with a Generac sub panel about 10 years ago. We have a lot of windstorms in Seattle and I wanted to be able to heat my home and power a few sockets when the power goes out. I get it out once or twice a year to make sure that it starts and it always has. This week, we had a big windstorm and lost power. I started up the generator, but it produced no power. I tried field flashing it and that didn’t work. Now I’ve been sitting in the cold dark house for five days. I’m done with Generac and will start exploring other , more reliable, products as I will never trust Generac again, I suggest you do the same if you’re contemplating buying this.

    Brand new GP6500 won't Start

I lost power during Hurricane Milton and purchased a GP 6500 from Lowes. Took it home installed the wheels, legs, handle and put oil in according to Geneac's instructions, put in fresh gasoline and started the unit it ran flawlessly for 6hours shut down the unit for the night and the next morning it would not start. I checked that it had fuel and spark which it did have both, but when I put my finger over the spark plug hole to check for compression it pulled a vacuum on my finger. I removed the valve cover and the push rod on the intake valve was not in the rocker arm but laying on the bottom of the cylinder head. I tried to return it to Lowes but they said I would have to get a return authorization from Generac.I called Generac and after an hour on hold they said I would have to take it to an authorized Generac service center and gave me a number to call in my area. I called them and they said it would cost me 100 dollars for them to "EVALUATE " the unit I said that it was under warranty and should NOT cost anything since it was still new I also told them what was wrong with it they informed me that it would still cost 100 dollars to look at it. I then called Generac again and after another hour on hold told them of this situation to which they said I have to take it to a Generac service center for the warranty. So if you are thinking about purchasing a Generac product GOOD LUCK, Generac doesn't care about their products after you buy them and the people they contract for their warranty work try to rip you off. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER GENERAC PRODUUCT EVER!!! Oh and when I went back to try and return it to Lowes there was a line of 10 people trying to return the same unit because they WON'T START

Several Failures Out Of The Box

A batch of these came to the local Home Depot after hurricane Helene. I bought one that did not have a voltage output when started. Took the control panel apart and voltage output became normal and continued to work fine after that. A friend bought one and both gfcis would kick off after 10 seconds or so. Replaced the gfcis and it worked fine.A third unit also required replacement of one of the gfcis because it continued to trip without any indication of a ground fault after multiple swapping of loads between the two circuits and another generator. It was a pain to replace the gfcis because the wiring harness has wires pulled tight across the devices such that you have to take several wires loose just to get to them. Relanding the wires was also unnecessarily difficult. Other than the early failures, all three units appear to be running well.

PRODUCT Q&A
PRODUCT Q&A

Q.Can you power a flat screen tv with this generator? I heard that you shouldn't power a flat screen tv with a generator.

A.Thank you for your question. This generator would not be suggested to run a TV. You should consider a pure sine wave generator. You'll need to check the brand, model and suggested usages for that generator.

Q.What type of fuel does this use?

A.Thank you for your question. This takes gasoline. Unleaded is the best but treating the gas also works.

Q.Hello! I purchased the above machine, GP 6500-Watt Single Fuel (Gasoline) Portable Generator Model #76721. We needed it for the hurricane, which involved a lot of rain. The generator states not to expose to rain. Is there a cover made for it that would serve to protect it from precipitation in the event that one does not have anywhere to put it other out of the rain? What do people usually do with these in hurricanes, snow, precipitation, etc.? Is there a housing unit that is made to put/keep it in? Let me know. We need to be better prepared for the next natural disaster, with our new generator. Thank you.

A.Thank you for your question. When the machine is not in use you're able to cover it with a tarp or generic cover. When it is running, you are able to cover the unit but need to have a clearance of 3-4 feet on either side and it needs to be ventilated. Never use the unit in an enclosed space such as inside a home or in a partially open garage.

Q.GFCI keeps tripping every time the refrigerator compressor kicks on. The same with the freezer. These are the only two items connected to a brand new (as of today) GP6500. What needs to be done to resolve this?

A.Thank you for reaching out. Check to make sure the starting and running draw is not more than the generators capabilities.

Q.what is THD under load ?

A.Thank you for reaching out. That question has many variables. We do not have ratings for different harmonic distortion ratings under varying loads.
